How an original Virginia Beach Orange Crush is built
The Orange Crush was not invented in a cocktail book. It came out of Maryland, landed at this oceanfront shortly after, and has been poured the same way ever since. Four parts, no shortcuts in any of them.
- One orange, squeezed to orderOne fresh orange per drink, hand-squeezed, never from a carton. The oranges in your kit are counted for exactly that.
- 3 oz Waterman's Perfect CrushHalf orange vodka, half orange liqueur, blended by Waterman Spirits for this drink. It is the one ingredient we do not supply, because you buy the alcohol. A 1 liter bottle pours about 11 crushes.
- A splash of Sprite, soda water, or half and half, about 2 ozSprite keeps it sweet, soda water keeps it dry, and half of each splits the difference. That is how a lot of regulars take it. Any more than a splash and you have made something else.
- Packed over pebble ice, then flippedFill the cup with pebble ice and build on top of it. To mix, flip the whole thing into a second cup and back again. That is how a crush gets mixed. No stirring, no shaking.
